When a local healthcare company asked us to carry out a defit in a live environment, while not disrupting client operations, SJC Building Group faced a unique challenge that required careful planning and execution.
The client
HBF is a leading healthcare insurer, with over a million members across Australia. Recognised as Australia’s most trusted health insurance provider in 2023, it provides a range of affordable hospital and extras cover options to support the wellbeing of Australians.
The crux
HBF came to us for a defit. They knew it would be a live environment and wanted to disrupt the daily operations as little as possible. This was no small challenge for a company who supports over a million Australians.
We started as we always do: by diving in and burying ourselves in the details of the project. Our goals? To consult with the practice manager to understand the working hours and how (and when) we would work. To create an integrated and refined approach to trade and materials arriving. This meticulous planning and close collaboration with the client set expectations for our work.
In constant communication
The end goal was to complete the defit for HBF Mandurah while keeping the client experience front of mind. To achieve this, we had to maintain clear and open lines of communication between our Project Manager and the Practice Manager at all times.
Once HBF were comfortable with the scope, we set our approach:
- Carry out works during low traffic periods to minimise the disruption to daily operations
- Orchestrate a seamless flow of materials and trades to keep timelines on track
- Communicate daily with practice managers to make sure our works weren’t impacting HBF customers, and make adjustments if they were
The result? The team delivered a smooth project for HBF Mandurah with minimal disruptions and expertly completed the defit.

The final delivery
Construction projects are measured against time, cost and quality.
